Armchair Fiction presents extra-large editions of classic science fiction double novels with original illustrations. The first novel, “Gladiator at Law,” is written by two of the best science fiction writers of all time, Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth. G-M-L Homes, manufacturers of bubble houses, the greatest advance in the history of architecture, had become the biggest and most powerful corporation in the history of commerce. Unfortunately, power, greed, and rampant criminal activity had taken over corporate principals. Charles Mundin, just a criminal lawyer, had unwittingly been pulled into the thick of things, when Norma Lavin—a very beautiful client of his—had been kidnapped by corporate operatives. With grim resolve Mundin, along with the help of a shrewd accomplice, Harry Ryan, laid the plans to get the girl back and expose the massive corruption of a giant corporation. But never had there been a more one-sided battle—a handful of nobodies, armed only with ingenuity and audacity, against the greatest concentration of financial and economic power in all history! The stakes, though, were larger than money or influence; they were the fulfillment of a dead man’s dream! The second novel is Paul W. Fairman’s great tale, “The Jack of Planets.” It was something that the bigwigs at the U. S. Space program couldn’t seem to figure out. Over the past twenty years two different interplanetary flights, Voyager-One and Voyager-Two, had blasted off for Mars. It was assumed they had landed there, successfully, each with a four-person crew. But after each ship had arced toward the planet’s surface…nothing. They had never been heard from again. No communications, no distress calls, not a peep. Both missions were eventually written off as failures. However, now the space program was poised for another try This time the equipment was newer, more durable, and the crew more thoroughly trained. But all the training in the world would do no good against a Martian landscape fraught with peril and not one, but two races of creatures bound and determined to make sure Earth’s explorers never saw home again.

I first read this book as a young teenager, I'm now 69, it created an impression on me. A dystopian future that to me a a kid seemed entirely possible. Sadly as an adult I still believe something like this is possible, the only bright spot.......I won't be around to experience it!

Gladiator at Law The Jack of Planets Frederik Pohl C M Kornbluth Paul W Fairman 9781612873497 Books Reviews

Classic SF from the Silver Age. Social satire is fresh and relevant, though the gender politics are clearly dated. Fast paced intelligent fun.
You could call it the Hunger Games of its day. Gladiator at Law, vintage sci fi novel, has a few weaknesses as a novel. But they are not important, compared with the brilliant and prophetic depiction of a world controlled by corporations. Anybody who reads the novel's description of the ultimate corporate villain--the conglomerate known as Green, Charlesworth--and its two horrific CEOs, will look around at our world today and say, "Mmm hmm Green, Charlesworth."
This and their others written years ago were way ahead of their time.
And they are fun too. Worth your time
I read this when I was in my early 20s & loved it, my old copy was a paperback and finally self-destructed, So I wanted a hardcover copy to grow old with. It's a scary vision of the future, where if you don't work for a corporation, your life is condemned to a lower caste existence complete with bread & circuses. It's old fashioned in some ways, futuristic in others , but it's Frederik Pohl, so the writing is Great.
C. M. Kornbluth was a genius. Frederick Pohl was a competent editor, who wrote a whole lot better when he was writing with Kornbluth (on his own, he's still just...competent). Their collaborations were the best 'social satire' science-fiction of the 1950's. At the time, sf was a literary ghetto...or their books (and Kornbluth's solo work, Syndic) would be best social satire of the 1950's, period.
This book is set in approximately the same type of dystopian future as The Space Merchants and The Merchants War. I first read them in the 70s, but many of the "predictions" still work today. A little dated, but well crafted and believable. What I like about older SF is there's none of the 5 pages of descriptive adjectives that seems to be all the rage; every word is designed to further the plot.
This is one of my favorite Pohl and Kornbluth novels, just behind The Space Merchants (which I devoutly hope is coming soon for the as well). Old time science fiction as social commentary. As dark in its way as Phillip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but with a super plot and a horrific extrapolation of the Arena into a culture controlled entirely by money and Illuminati-style power.
I first read this book as a young teenager, I'm now 69, it created an impression on me. A dystopian future that to me a a kid seemed entirely possible. Sadly as an adult I still believe something like this is possible, the only bright spot.......I won't be around to experience it!
